Scott Hughes

Scott and Fran Hughes somehow inherited the “defective car gene” as teenagers and have been playing with cars ever since.

Primarily BMW enthusiasts, they’ve also dabbled in P-cars and cherish their 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-door hardtop — a recreation of the car they dated in during high school.

In April 1968, David E. Davis Jr. wrote his legendary Car and Driver story, “Turn Your Hymnals to 2002.” Like many others, Scott and Fran ventured to their local one-car BMW showroom to see what all the excitement was about — and the rest is history.

Starting in New Jersey with autocross events, they soon moved into driving schools and organized the first-ever BMW CCA Driving School at Lime Rock Park in 1974. (Entry fee: $25 for a one-day school!)

After relocating to Ohio, they helped bring BMW driving schools to Mid-Ohio and beyond. Encouraged by friends, Scott earned his SCCA racing license — his first race being the Nelson Ledges Longest Day 24-Hour Race in a BMW 2002 (on a rookie license).

That experience led them to convince the BMW CCA Board to establish a full racing program. In 1995, at Moroso Motorsports Park, the BMW CCA Club Racing program was launched with 12 cars and a five-race schedule. Nearly 30 years later, the program has grown international in scope and, with Fran’s vital support, has licensed over 1,500 racers.

Scott and Fran have been fortunate to race at nearly every major track in the U.S. and Canada — from their beloved Championship 2002 and E30 M3 to their factory 1973 3.0 CSL at the Le Mans Classic 24 Hours.

Their automotive adventures have expanded to tours, car shows, and numerous Concours honors — including multiple awards at the Hilton Head Island Concours d’ Elegance & Motoring Festival.

Proud members of LOMDS and the Pinnacle Society, Scott and Fran continue to celebrate a lifelong passion for driving, racing, and the friendships that come with it.
